Chen Wen Hsi
The Art of Chen Wen Hsi: Chinese Ink to Western Modern Art

23 September - 14 November 2017

Element Art Space is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Chen Wen Hsi (b. 1906 - d. 1991), one of the most celebrated and prolific first generation artists in Singapore.

 

This exhibition brings the rare opportunity to experience Chen Wen Hsi's works that have not been shown since his 1987 show in Beijing, China. Gathered from an esteemed collection ranging from abstraction to Chinese ink painting, from canvas to paper works, this showcase will be an eye-opening homage to the late artist and highlights the fusion of Chinese art and Western modern art that Chen is well known for. This show will highlight his rarely seen landscape paintings as well as notable subject matters in Chen’s oeuvre such as the highly sought-after paintings on Egrets and Gibbons.

Memories of China

'Memories of China’ will explore the resurgence of art in China after the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76 by featuring artists born near or during that period and display how they perceive China and art in China using the most traditional subject in Chinese painting—landscape. Erianto’s latest body of work once again pushed the limits of painting in an exceptional manner, evoking a sense of urgency to rethink paintings as they used to be practice. Using Photorealism, the artist created spatial illusion using optical tricks that disable our brains from understanding physical reality. Erianto suggests that realism is actually the ability to create dissociation between our perception and the reality itself, hence making realism to be an illusion of reality.

Wang Xiao Qing: Glorious Legend of Chinese Pi Xiu

Xiao Qing is one of the first Chinese artists to paint the Pi Xiu. She brings out the creature’s dominating essence by using bright and bold colours with a gentle edge.
