Jay Yao (Jose Campos III) was raised with one foot in Vancouver, and the other in Manila. Yao did his thesis photography exhibit on Canadian-Asian identity at Hampshire College. After college, Yao moved to New York to further his skills as an artist focusing in photography. He currently spends the majority of his time in Metro-Manila.

 

Yao has had solo exhibitions at Hiraya Gallery (Manila), Museum Pambata (Manila), Silverlens (Manila), Tixe Artspace (New York), Manifesto Gallerie (Manila), and quite recently in Artinformal (Manila). His group exhibitions include, Lightbombs (Hong Kong), Australian Center of Photography (Sydney), Fondazione Ciorgio Cini (Venice), and Metropolitan Museum (Manila). He has been sponsored by the Canadian and Mexican embassy in his earlier days.

 

 Yao was requested by the Mexican Embassy to do an exhibition celebrating 150 years of Mexican Influence in the Philippines in 1998. In 2005, Yao represented the Philippines for the Goethe Insitut project “Art Connexions: SYD-MLA-KUL.” His “Homecoming” series, was nominated and short-listed for the Ateneo Art Awards (Philippines) in 2014. His work is currently part of the permanent collections of Imago Mundi Art (Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche), and also Asia Society (New York). Yao is an alumnus of Hampshire College, Parsons, and Columbia University.
